Pirate Playtime

Related imageOur theme for May has been Pirates! Arrrrgh!
Image result for piratesWe began our learning with Pirate Camp. We had to learn about the 5 Oceans and then about some sea creatures. The children know lots of interesting facts on these two topics! We learned a bit about pirates long ago too and got our very own pirate names! Shiver me timbers!

The children did a fantastic job on their pirate books. They had to write an ocean fact, a sea creature fact and a pirate fact.

Then we brought our learning into playtime. We had a very messy water station where the children explored floating and sinking, and capacity, informally. They made ocean scenes at the art table by  experimenting with different shades of blue. There was the role play area with a pirate ship, buried treasure and map making. The construction area had pirate pictures to inspire the building there too.

Yo, ho, ho!!!

Maths-Spatial Awareness

We are developing our spatial awareness skills in Maths at the moment. The children practiced the skills they've been working on today using treasure maps! We are doing the Pirate theme for the next few weeks, and this was a fun way to tie it into other subjects.

Related imageIn pairs, the children drew a treasure island map, including dangerous areas to avoid like snakes, volcanoes and scary locals. Then they had to guide their partner to where they had hidden the treasure using spatial awareness vocab, e.g. left, right, up, down, beside, above... It was also a great opportunity to practice counting and estimating how many boxes they had to move!

Pirate Theme

This month we have been learning all about pirates! We did a pirate camp where we learned about the oceans we would sail on as pirates and the different sea creatures we might encounter on ARRRRRRRGH adventures. Once we passed our Pirate Test we were given new pirate names and made our Pirate passports.

We have been exploring maps using the story Rosie's Walk and we made our own treasure maps of the school.  We swapped maps with our partners and found where they had buried their treasure...x marks the spot!

This week we have two pirate ships, a plank, some telescopes made by Isabel and Rachel, a captain's hat and a lot of imagination for our drama station! We are designing our own pirate flags, making treasure maps and using our ocean magnet scene to explore the ocean...
