Maths
Fun ways to use Maths informally
·
Monday: learn how to play Achi, a board game from Ghana, here: https://blog.mindresearch.org/blog/big-list-mathematical-board-games (it’s the first game and there is a video to help explain it. Game template here: https://info.mindresearch.org/hubfs/MIND%20Research%20Institute/MathMINDs/Printables/printable-fmn-achi.pdf. You could use different colours of lego, pasta shapes, cut out circles and colour them, etc. for the pieces). Good way to explore problem solving and spatial awareness.

·    Tuesday (or whatever day has the best weather!): Water play-explore capacity by playing with different containers, cups, measuring jugs, bowls etc. Older and more able children should be encouraged to measure how much each container holds using a measuring jug. Have a water fight, but measure how much each gun can hold! Who has the best chance of winning??

·         Wednesday: Baking! Explore weight, time, capacity and more by baking together.

·         Thursday: Card games and board games. These are brilliant for working on problem solving, counting, number recognition, spatial awareness and so much more!!
Here are some good card games you could introduce along with old favourites like Snap, Go Fish, Pairs etc…
Ø  Make 10: https://mamapapabubba.com/2016/06/28/make-ten-an-easy-card-game-for-kids/ (could reduce to 5 for Juniors and to a higher number for 1st)
Ø  6 Great Games: https://topnotchteaching.com/math/math-card-games/ (the last game would only be suitable for 1st Class and they should only do Tens and Units for that game (introduce Hundreds if they are finding it too easy).
Ø  A book full of card games: http://www.pepnonprofit.org/uploads/2/7/7/2/2772238/acing_math.pdf (Grade K=kindergarten which is usually suitable for our classroom, Grade 1 would be to challenge 1st Class).

·         Friday: emoji maths pdf attached to email. Juniors do page1, Seniors do pg3 and 1st Class do pg5

Notes:
·         Include time for play every day! It is the most important part of a child’s learning!
·         Send in pictures/videos of your work for our classroom blog on Friday.
·         Any questions, let me know! Remember, this is not a to-do list of work, just suggestions!
