Christmas Playtime

Have a look at our Christmas playtime this week. We have some Christmas-themed playdough boards for creative thinking, fine motor skills and oral language. There is also an Art station where the boys and girls are making Gingerbread Children! We have a Write the Room Christmas activity where the children go on a word hunt around the room. Finally, we have a North Pole role-play area. The children will be in role as elves, but also as different people who help us, e.g. doctors, nurses, vets, builders, mechanics etc., depending on what happens in their drama!

The Gingerbread Man

We have been looking at The Gingerbread Man all week. After hearing the story we did a sequencing activity and built sentences during English stations. Bernie took groups during playtime down to the staff room to bake and decorate yummy gingerbread men.

The children worked with their Junior and Senior Infant partners to design, source materials and build gingerbread houses. They look amazing!!!

2D Shapes

We have been learning about 2D shapes! We know all about squares (4 corners and 4 equal sides), rectangles (4 corners and 4 sides-2 short and 2 long), circles (0 corners and 1 side) and triangles (3 corners and 3 sides). We went for shape hunts around the school with our partners and found lots of examples of these shapes in the local environment! Today we made some 2D shape snowmen, as it is feeling very much like winter today!!!

The 5 Senses

Image result for 5 senses mr potatoWe have been learning about the 5 senses in the Junior Classroom, and what body part we use for each sense.

Last week we created collages for each sense using pictures from magazines and played a senses bingo game...

This week we discussed textures and different words to describe how something feels. We then made Texture Monsters...

On Friday, for Science Week, we made popcorn! We thought of words for each sense about popcorn and then did a writing activity based on this. Best of all, we had to eat the popcorn to see how it tasted!!! Yummy...
